Warm socks, gloves, or other sturdy winter clothing for children and adults. If possible, also English-language tutorial books meant for Farsi or Darsi speakers. |
Recently, I've begun serving as the advance party commander for my company as we move from FOB Ramrod into an Afghan National Army (ANA) compound in Howz-e Madad. In the past 2 weeks, I have been working closely with ANA soldiers, setting up contracts, buildings, protocols, negotiating for assets and missions, and more. I have found our Afghan counterparts very impressive, and
sincerely believe they could secure the country with a bit of our help. Their bravery is all the more notable considering that they volunteered to join the ANA in what used to be a Taliban stronghold and continues to be one of the most hostile areas in the country.
In the coming months, our ability to build strong ties of trust and cooperation with the ANA will be critical to our success as we work to transform them into an effective fighting force free of corruption, and capable of defending this region against taliban incursion. It's an ambitious goal,
but with a bit of your help, we think we can get there.
In particular, I wanted to share with you an idea that my team came up with: Many of these soldiers come directly from communities in the surrounding area, which are exceedingly poor. Children and adults of all ages frequently don't have warm socks, gloves, or other sturdy winter clothing to deal with the harsh cold. Reflecting this, we were thinking it would be a great idea to carry out a joint distribution event with the ANA giving out
warm clothing to local communities--it would both meet a humanitarian purpose and also build ties of solidarity between my troops and the ANA we are mentoring. |
