100 notebooks and 200 pens for distribution by Apache Troop soldiers to children. |
Since leaving COP Lowell, I have been redeployed to Kunar province, right along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. It is extremely poor, has a unique mix of many tribal groups (Nuristanis, Pashtuns, Gojers, and others all live in close contact with each other), and a significant Al-Qaeda/Taliban stronghold. Safe to say, it has been a tough place for us and relatively undeveloped by US Forces. Many in the area have not seen US soldiers for more than a year if ever. Right now, we are trying hard to win the support of the local population, and most importantly, demonstrate to them that cooperating with the government is to their advantage. Improving security is our priority, but we also are seeking to improve the roads and access to basic services in this area as well.
One of the ways we'd like to do this is to help local schools. We've found that many kids come to class with virtually nothing--not even pencils and paper. Because of this, school supplies of all sorts are needed. What is most necessary are notebooks and pens/pencils. Also required are pencil sharpeners, staples/staplers, tape, and bookbags. |
